How to Apply for a Chinese Tourist Visa
The information in this article is written for USA citizens. Other countries have somewhat similar information available for the use of their citizens.
Any alien wishing to enter China needs a passport and visa. The "L" visa is the one for travel in China or for visiting family members in China.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry into the country. There must also be at least one blank page in the passport for the visa to be stamped onto.
To apply, bring a completed Visa Application form and one passport size photograph of yourself to the Consulate General Office or the Chinese Embassy located in the consular jurisdiction in which you presently live. Although it is best to bring those items yourself, it is acceptable for you to entrust them with someone whom you trust to do your business.
Usually, it is best to pick up the visa yourself. The waiting time for the visa is four days. The cost is $130 US for USA citizens for a single-entry visa or a multiple-entry visa which is good for twenty-four months. Citizens of other countries must pay $30 for a single-entry up to $90 for a twenty-four month multiple-entry visa. You must pay by cash, money order, Visa or Master Card, a company check or a cashier's check. A personal check is not accepted.
There is a rush service at extra cost as well as a mail-back service being available. Mailed applications for a visa to China are not accepted.
Tourists to China must have a return air ticket outside the country and a hotel reservation.
Be aware that certain medical conditions will prevent one from acquiring a Chinese Tourist Visa. These include mental illness, leprosy, AIDS, a venereal disease or contagious tuberculosis.
