Places in China: Anhui Province
For great mountain vistas in China, one can hardly beat the Huangshan Mountains and Jiuhua Mountain in Anhui Province. Much of the time, the mountain paths up and down the Huanghshan Mountains are filled with hiking groups. These are among the most beautiful mountains in the country. Jiuhua Mountain, also in Anhui, is a Buddhist sacred mountain. About fifty of the two hundred original Buddhist temples still exist.
Artists, world leaders and pilgrims enjoy the magnificent views of the Huangshan Mountains around Tunxi, which is sometimes referred to as Huangshan City. Pine trees, bamboo forests, waterfalls, interesting rock formations and hot springs await those who climb to see them.
The people of Anhui Province are hardworking Han people. They are in the Shanghai Special Economic Zone so industry is a strong part of their livelihood. The region is more highly populated than the Chinese national average. In fact, there are more than three times as many people in Anhui than the national average.
Being only two hundred fifty miles from Shanghai, with air connections to many other parts of the country, makes Anhui rather convenient for travellers to visit. Rail connections are also available to and from Anhui. Located in southeast China, over sixty percent of the province is covered with hills and mountains. These are largely in the southwestern area of the province. In the northeastern area, the elevation is much lower. Two rivers tend to cause problems when they overflow. The Huai and Yangzi Rivers help to keep some of the population of the area rather poor.
There are six nature reserves in Anhui and three state-level ancient cultural cities, Bozhou, Shexian and Shouxian. Among the top tourist cities in China are three from Anhui. They are Bozhou, Huangshan and the capital city of Hefei. Tourists tend to enjoy the fifteen cable ways which have been established in Anhui.
Historical sites in the province include a stone arch at Xuguo as well as the Tangyue Archways in Shexian. There are also some historical opera theatres in Bozhou. If visiting Hefei, a few of the old moats from the Ming dynasty can be explored.
For travellers who want souvenirs of Anhui, suggestions include bronze wares, arts and crafts items and iron pictures.
For those visiting Anhui, expect the weather of a warm temperate zone since the province is in southeastern China. Summertime visitors should plan on hot weather while winter visitors can expect mild winters.
Anhui Province is the twenty-second largest province in China with the eighth largest provincial population in the country.
