Places in China: Chongqing Province

The municipality of Chongqing is the city plus the rest of the 82,000 square kilometres which include Fuling, Wanxian and Qianjiang towns. The municipality resembles a province in China although it is under the direct control of the central government of the PRC.

Over thirty million people call this municipality home, including ninety-one percent Han Chinese as well as forty-nine other ethnic minorities. Because of the diversity, there are customs of the various tribal peoples which tourists find quite interesting. Actually, Chongqing is the birthplace of the Bayu Culture in China.

Lots of attractions and places of interest in Chongquing's municipality bring many choices for visitors to the area. Museums, cultural relics, revolutionary sites, parks and scenic areas of natural beauty join with shopping experiences, sightseeing and entertainment to lure people from all parts of the world to Chongqing. Located between two rivers, the Yangtze and the Jialingjiang, and surrounded by mountains and hills full of green growth, this is a place of rare beauty.

The city itself is appealing with its bike-free streets, steep hills, great historical sites as well as great food and nightlife. One can go out on his own or sign up for a tour of this ancient city beside the river.

Summertime in Chongqing can be hot, giving rise to one of the municipality's nicknames, Furnace City. Another nickname for the city applies to the fog and coldness during the winter; that is Foggy City. At any time of the year, the third nickname applies, which is Mountain City. As the nicknames imply, the best times to visit Chongqing is in the spring or autumn since winters are frigid, and summers are torrid.

Getting into and out of Chongqing is a breeze now that so many transportation options have become available. The Jiangbei International Airport has opened the door to large and mid-sized cities across the globe from Chongqing. The twenty-three kilometre trip from urban areas to the airport costs only one hundred yuan. The Chongqing Railway Station in the urban area contains three main national rail lines. Many national highways go to and from this municipality link the city to many parts of China. Taking a bus or coach is easy since there are so many bus stations in the area.

Of course, the Three Gorges Dam and resulting large reservoir have made cruise ship travel possible. Three types of ships are possible, the foreign tourist boat, the domestic tourist boat and the common passenger boat.

Within the municipal limits, there are buses and trolley buses available from 5:30 to 21:00 every day. Most of the local attractions are available on the bus lines as well as the airport.
