Places in China: Guangxi Zhungzu Autonomous Region

Diversity in landscape in the Guangxi region helps to create strong interest in tourists' visits. From the Gulf of Tonkin in the southern areas to the jagged green limestone mountains next to blue waters in the rivers, this is one of the most picturesque areas in China, especially around the famous city of Guilin.

The scenery is outstanding throughout the province although Guilin and Yangshuo seem to have the most scenic attractions of the region. Not only the natural attractions, but the people also attract many visitors to Guangxi. The cultural diversity is immense here and especially interesting when the various ethnic minorities have their festivals and dress in their historic costumes.

As expected, the Han are the most numerous among the ethnics groups in Guangxi, but the Zhuang also are highly represented with 34 percent of the population. Other ethnic groups in the province include Yao, Miao, Dong and Gelao along with smaller minorities such as Tong, Mulam, Maonan, Yi, Shui, Jing and Hui.

The Guangxi Province is actually now the Guangxi Zhungzu Autonomous Region and has been since 1958. The change took place on the recommendation of Zhou Enlai. The province actually became a part of China in 214 BC.

Vietnamese influence is rather strong in this region since it borders Vietnam on the southwest corner of the province. Being one of the southernmost provinces, Guangxi has a subtropical climate with monsoon rains and mild winters. The summers tend to be long and hot with a lot of humidity.

Nanning is the capital city of the province and is one of many cities with great attractions to lure tourists. The capital city is around seventy-five miles from the Vietnam border.

Mountains, caves and picturesque rock formations make this a great place for photographers. The Duyao and Fenghuang Mountains in the north, the Nanling Mountains in the northeast and the Yunkai Mountains on the southeast all add to the mountain panorama of the province. There is a 930 mile coast on the Gulf of Tonkin bordering Vietnam and hills and plains covering the central areas of the region.

Whether the mountainous beauties attract one or the available boat ride from Guilin down the Li Jiang, this province is a tourist hot spot. If one wants to see how the local people make money, he can take in the farming or the mining in the region. Forestry and fishing are also important sources of income for the people of the Guangxi Zhungzu Autonomous Region.
