Places in China: Hainan Province
This tropical island paradise off the southern coast of Guangdong Province is one of China's greatest tourist attractions. Made up of one larger island plus around two hundred smaller islands, this province attracts visitors from many parts of the world.
The beach resorts, found largely at the southern shore city of Sanya, have high quality resort hotels and attractions, mostly golf, water sports and scuba diving. The 2004 Miss World Beauty Pageant was held here.
The capital city of Haikou, which has a major highway linking it with Sanya, is a good place to explore for Chinese shopping. There are attractions plus it is the location of the province's airport and ferry port. Thus, most people who visit the province also go through Haikou.
Another attraction, found in the centre of the island is Li Village. It is made up of the Li people who came to China two thousand years ago. The village caters to tourists who want to see the traditional life style of the Li people.
The island's centre is mountainous with thick forests. The shores of the main islands are made up of around 900 miles of shoreline, some of which is used for pearl harvesting and fishing except around Sanya and the resort hotel area in the south. Some of the income from the province, which is also a Special Economic Zone, is from the good farming. The tropical climate is good for producing some good crops. Winters are quite mild in Hainan while the long summers tend to be hot and rather high in humidity.
There is a railway on the western side of Hainan Islands. Fairly good roads are found along the shores.
The people of the province are around eighty-three percent Han, sixteen percent Li people and Miao, Zhuang and Hui making up the rest of the population. The population as well as the size of the province is smaller than the average of China's provinces.
