Places in China: Jinlin Province
Natural beauty and natural settings, unusual wild animals and Baitou Volcano are among the features of the cold Jilin Province, located in the northeastern part of China. It borders North Korea and Russia. Thus, two-thirds of the Korean people in China are located within Jilin Province, especially in Changchun and Jilin City.
Because of its location, the population is not too high in the province. Around twenty-seven million inhabitants occupy 187,400 square kilometres of land area. Thus, the population density is at 257 persons per square kilometre.
The summers in Jilin are short and rainy while the winters are long and very cold. The local Ice Lantern Spectacle in the province takes place during the cold winters. There are ski resorts in the province and other winter activities. Tourism is highly encouraged in Jilin Province.
Three specialty products which the Chinese value highly are produced in Jilin. They are ginseng, mink and the antlers of the pilose deer. Other exotic animals which are native to Jilin include Manchurian hares, Manchurian tigers, leopards and snakes which the farmers encourage to remain to destroy rats.
The province is a high producer of grain, providing a great percentage of the grain used within China. Industry is also strong in Jilin with the First Automobile Works, one of the country's most valued car producers. The province capital of Changchun has been important in China's movie industry. The Changchun Film Studio was established in 1946 and has tours of its facilities available.
The palace of a puppet emperor, installed by the Japanese while they occupied Manchuria from 1930 to 1945, is now a museum. A visit to Changchun should include a visit to the Puppet Emperor's Palace.
Caves, pagodas and sand dunes are among the features in Jilin Province which visitors often like to see. Many of them are in the city of Dunhuang.
Mountains on the southeastern border, next to North Korea, are tall and snowy and are one of only three locations on Earth with black earth. The black earth contrasting with the white snow makes for a unique and often-photographed landscape.
Jilin Province was once a part of Manchuria (also called Dongbei) along with two other northeastern provinces, Liaoning and Heilongjiang.
