Places in China: Liaoning Province
Formerly a part of Manchuria (or Dongbei), along with two other northeastern provinces in the country, Liaoning Province is a place with hot summers but very cold winters. It is, however, a strong element in the Chinese economy.
Rich natural resources in the province, such as large iron deposits, diamonds, boron and magnesite add to the nation's wealth. Liaoning also has important industries such as chemical, natural gas and petroleum.
The port city of Dalian is very important to the province with its beaches, countryside vistas and industries. Being on the Bohai Sea makes the city an attractive tourist destination as well.
The largest city in the province is also the capital of Liaoning. Shenyang became the capital of the province in the seventeenth century. Since it was a major city in Manchuria, it has an interesting past. Presently, it is a good tourism centre with the Shenyang imperial palace complex. The imperial palace moved to Beijing, but the remaining palace makes it the second in grandiose design to the Forbidden City in Beijing. The city's industrial sites are not too appealing, but the imperial palace and East Mausoleum are well worth the time to visit.
Liaoning is the 21st largest province in China with around 150,000 square kilometres of land area. The population, which is around eighty-five percent Han Chinese, is over forty-two million people. The other fifteen percent are mostly Manchu with several other ethnic groups also represented. The local people tend to continue to use their own native languages and observe their cultural heritage.
There are well-preserved ancient cities in the province showing evidences of the life styles of various periods in the history of the province.
Being situated between seas and a river, the province has been dubbed the 'golden triangle' of China. Hot springs in several regions of the province add to the attraction for visitors.
